What would the hull weight be with the steel version and what power would I then need to get to plane speed?

Answer

Hi Hull weight in steel is 1.75 tonne of steel. Plating is 1/8'' or 3mm. I have seen one doing about 20 knots plus in Sydney Harbour with a big Mercruiser petrol motor. I was going in the opposite direction and thought that boat is going well and realised it was one that had been built the previous year on Sydney and kept in Sydney Harbour at Gladesville. I think the Mercruiser was about 220hp. If you intend to fit an outboard then I would recommend a 200hp,and I would keep outfitting costs low. With a sterndrive a diesel is the way to go because you can have built in fuel tanks. The new Yanmar light weight diesels at 200hp plus are ideal. One of the advantages of building in steel is that you can build in the open and shot blast and epoxy paint the hull on completion of fabrication. Weights of course must be carefully watched as the steel version is about 0.9 tonne heavier than the aluminium version
